What a fascinating article. Your tying of "Daddy" to Freud makes so much sense -- I could never believe it was simply autobiographical. The breakdown of the "As You Like It" monologue and then the Lowell preface to Plath's work are really intriguing. I know enough of Yeats to understand that most of his work was encoded in mystic symbols also -- and in all these cases (Plath, Yeats, Eliot) the poems are beckoning and meaningful because these ancient mystical symbols do really touch something common and deep, even if one is not aware of symbol systems such as the Tarot. But your explicit analysis of the Plath poems is truly insightful, and adds a very necessary layer to the understanding of her work. (And it removes a lot of the overly dramatic dark romance, a much-needed removal. Thank you!)
